Biography
Solveig Nelson, an art critic and art historian, is currently the Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow in Time-based Media at the Art Institute of Chicago. She recently completed her dissertation, The Whole World is (Still) Watching: the Televisual, Early Video, Nonviolent Direct Action, 1930s–1970s, the Feitler Prize for the Best Dissertation in 2018 from the Art History Department, University of Chicago. At the Art Institute, she co-organized the Chicago presentation of the retrospective Gregg Bordowitz: I Wanna Be Well, 2018, with Robyn Farrell. Currently she co-facilitates the Mellon Time-based Media Initiative with the Grainger Conservation Fellow in Time-Based Media, Kristin MacDonough, and is co-organizing Vaginal Davis: The White to be Angry, Winter 2020, with Hendrik Folkerts. She is recipient of a Creative Capital Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for the in-progress essay, "Gretchen Bender's Total Recall, 1987 and the Feminist Return of Television Art," as well as fellowships from Luce/ACLS and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has contributed to Artforum since 2012 and is currently contributing essays to catalogs on Steve McQueen, David Hartt, and Ray Johnson. Prior stand-alone courses that Nelson taught at the University of Chicago include Art in Chicago; New Queer Cinema and the Art of the Culture Wars; History of Video Art, and 20th Century Art.
